Superchips delivers performance increase direct to BMW ECUs

$
0
0

Global ECU remapping leader Superchips has developed a method to deliver a performance-enhancing remap direct to the Engine Control Unit (ECU) on thus-far ‘un-tuneable’ BMW cars

Until now, the company has used its Superchips EPC tuning device, which contained the revised settings for the engine’s ECU to help increase power and torque, as well as in some cases, fuel economy.

However, the company has been working on developing a method of reprogramming the ECU directly, using the vehicle’s On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) port, as it does with so many of its other conversions.

However, before this can take place on the F-Series chassis of the BMW range, the car’s ECU must be removed, opened, reprogrammed and refitted. This then enables Superchips to communicate with the vehicle via the OBD port.

As with all of Superchips’ conversions, the gains are very impressive, giving both turbocharged petrol and diesel engines useful gains in torque and power. Diesel engines typically experience up to 7% gains in fuel economy as well, when compared with a similar driving style.

IMAG0188 SC Blog sized

The new method of application applies to the F-series chassis and includes models ranging from the 114i to the 640d. The following table shows the different models and their respective performance gains:

118d, 218d, 318d, 418d, 518d, X3 xDrive18d                          +41bhp/80Nm

335d, 435d, 535d, 640d, 740d, X3 xDrive35d, X5 xDrive40d    +66bhp/123Nm

135i, 335i, 435i, 535i, X3/X5/X6 xDrive35i                              +55bhp/128Nm

114i, 116i, 118i, 316i, 320iED                                                +48-114bhp/63-134Nm*

*Exact gains depend on the specification of the base vehicle

The process typically takes three hours and the customer can either leave their car with the Superchips dealer or wait while the conversion is carried out. The cost of the BMW remap is £399 including VAT and labour and all are covered by Superchips’ market-leading 30,000/12-month warranty.

The 300PS engine uses Continental management but Superchips has developed two stages of tune for the engine, which is similar to that used in the VW Golf R.

Stage 1 is intended for otherwise standard cars and adds 47bhp at 4325rpm and 66Nm torque at 4176rpm. Stage 2 is intended to work with cars which have had other performance-enhancing parts fitted, such as induction air kits or sports catalysts and helps to increase power by 80bhp and 115Nm torque.

Audi S3 croppedWhile these gains are, on paper, exceptional, in real terms, the way the increases are delivered is also impressive. Both Stage 1 and Stage 2 eliminate an inherent dip in the torque, and hence power, curves, improving driveability, engine response and performance.

In addition to comprising the remap to suit the replacement parts, some of which will be introduced by Superchips in the coming months, the Stage 2 conversion will also extinguish a Check Engine Light resulting from a sports catalyst being fitted or the catalyst being removed altogether, will remove the speed limit for motorsport use and increase the engine rev limit for manual cars.

The conversion is carried out by one of Superchips nationwide dealer network and typically takes less than an hour, since the process is now carried out using the vehicle’s OBDII (On Board Diagnostics) port. Customers can either wait at the dealer or drop off their car and return later to collect.

The cost of the Stage 1 conversion is £365 inclusive of labour and VAT while Stage 2 costs an additional £50 including VAT and labour for cars already converted to Stage 1 or £415 inclusive for standard cars. Both conversions are covered by Superchips’ industry-leading 12-month/30,000-mile warranty*.

Owners and drivers of cars using the three-cylinder one-litre petrol engine in the VAG group can now enjoy increased performance, thanks to the latest addition to the portfolio of global leader Superchips.

The 60PS engine, code CHYA, is found in the Volkswagen up!, the Skoda Citigo and the SEAT Mii and is a normally-aspirated three-cylinder engine designed to power the ‘city’ cars from the three manufacturers.

The remap from Superchips adds 16bhp at 6109rpm and 17Nm at 5882rpm – very impressive figures for a non-turbocharged engine. However, the remap also helps to eliminate several flat-spots in the original engine’s power and torque curves, giving very useful additional torque at just over 2000rom for improved driveability as well as maintaining the torque curve at higher revs for better acceleration.
